What crazy things restaurant rankings are, eh? A small group of the same old people pretty much are the judges for all the local restaurant awards, whether it is Gourmet Traveller, which announced its Sydney-centric version this week, or The Age, which is next week.
It’s a mad mad mad world when you factor in the user generated rankings from Urbanspoon, with the real winners in the two lists being Frank Camorra and his Movidas and Andrew McConnell with Cutler & Co, Cumulus inc and Golden Fields.
I wonder how relevant the Gourmet Traveller list still is in the world of social media. Both rankings are imperfect. When the people vote, research points to individuals following what other people think – the popular sentiment. That means on the web rankings swing from very good to very bad, which is a good argument for professional restaurant critics as a foil to mainly gushing reviews on review sites and blogs.
